Why "Looking Better" can reduce stress and extend your life.

Boosting one's self-esteem even in the slightest of ways whether through fashion, weight loss or cosmetic surgery improves their appearance and makes a world of difference to that person. They then become more confident and better able to cope with today's stressful situations.

How does stress affect health?

Consider the following facts:

bulletForty-three percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress.
bulletSeventy-five to 90% of all doctor's office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints.
bulletStress is linked to six of the leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide.
bulletThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declared stress a hazard of the workplace. In terms of lost hours due to absenteeism, reduced productivity and workers' compensation benefits, stress costs American industry more than $300 billion annually.
bulletThe lifetime prevalence of an emotional disorder is more than 50%, often due to chronic, untreated stress reactions.

The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges. As a result, the person becomes overworked, and stress-related tension builds.

Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress -- a negative stress reaction. Distress can disturb the body's internal balance or equilibrium -- leading to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.

Use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs becomes harmful when people try to relieve their troubles.  These substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems.

What does all this mean? Reward yourself! You'll become more confident, feel better and be much happier.

Realistically, too many people wait until a disease or illness is dangerously far advanced before they seek medical assistance. Not because they are ignoring the problem or avoiding treatment, but because they simply are not aware of the warning signs.

The Medical Awareness Institute's (MAI) mission is to promote pro-active healthcare partnerships, lower employer healthcare costs, reduce emergency room visits and ease taxpayer burdens.
